CCNY’s Art Education Graduate Program had a successful exhibition at the Colin Chase Gallery in Compton-Goethals Hall.
Exhibition description:
“Still Here, Waiting for the Things That Are Gone” emerges from the delicate moments between presence and absence, where the spaces between the two hold deep emotional resonance. This exhibition brings together a diverse group of art educators Tatiana Alfaro, Gordon Baldwin, Julia [redacted], Catalina Baselli, Sofia Choudhury, Dana Garrison, Madeleine Giles, Heather Hudgins, Rafaela Luna, Debbie Liu, Linda Smith, and Yana Toyber. Their works explore the complex themes of resilience, isolation, and collective memory.
Through a wide range of mediums including prints, paintings, ceramics and mixed media, these artists delve into the intangible spaces left behind by loss and the quiet endurance of waiting. Each piece speaks to the tension between what remains and what has been been lost, capturing moments of vulnerability, reflection, and strength. The act of “stillness” becomes an act of resistance; in the face of change, trauma or absence, remaining present is a profound statement of resilience.
The works featured in the exhibition act as visual testimonies to how memoery and experience shape our sense of self and community. The artists grapple with the weight of what is no longer there – whether it be a person, and object, or a moment – and through their art, offer a space for contemplation and healing. In their exploration of absence, they make visible the quiet strength in holding on.
“Still Here, Waiting for the Things That Are Gone” is not just exhibition of loss, but one that embraces the quiet power of persistence. It celebrates how, even in solitude or in the gaps left by absence, there is an undeniable presence – a form of resistance, or quiet defiance against the forces that seek to erase, forget or move on. Each piece stands a as a testament to the enduring human spirit and the importance of remembering what we may never fully reclaim.
In this exhibition, the act of waiting becomes an expression of strength and solidarity, as the works collectively affirm that what is gone is never truly gone, as long as we continue to hold it in our memories, our lives, and our art.
